(This was an e-mail response to some sisters on the issue of hijabing. I feel it had good information including regarding why we hijab)

Salaams Sisters,

This e-mail is regarding the covering issue. At first I wasn’t going to say anything but as I kept reading replies some responses bothered me. It sounds like excuses are being made not to cover. Yes, Allah will judge what is in your heart but do not make this an excuse not to cover. Whether you want to or not, It is obligatory to cover and a sin not to. Now I am not judging I have friends who cover and some who do not. And that is their personal business and yours for what ever reason that you have. However, you have to take responsibility on yourself do not say that it does not state in Islam that we do not have to cover because it does state. It is not a choice but your decision not to cover your head.

A couple of people stated that the Qur’an does not say to cover your head but it does state to cover. On the same note the Qur’an tells you that you have to pray not necessarily how to; you have to refer to the Hadiths for that. That is the same is for how to cover. There are several Hadiths that tell you how to cover; mainly stating everything must be covered except your hands and face and some state feet. Here is a couple of links of articles that tell you why we cover in the Qur’an the other tells you how. I hope this information is helpful for everyone. And remember to cover your hair which is your beauty is part of your religion but whether you do it or not is your personal choice not a religious choice.
Surah an-Nur ayah 31 says:
And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their head coverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful.

Ma Salaam
